Test Grade Calculator — What Did I Get on My Test?

You know how many questions you got right. This calculator turns that into a percentage and a letter grade — and shows exactly how many more correct answers each higher grade would have needed, so there is no mystery about how close you were. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded or tracked.

Enter correct answers and a total above 0.

Worked example: 42 correct out of 50 → 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84% (B), 8 missed. An A would have needed 47 correct (93% of 50 is 46.5, rounded up) — 5 more right answers.

Frequently asked questions

How is a test grade calculated?

Divide correct answers by total questions and multiply by 100. Example: 42 correct out of 50 → 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%, a B. Missed questions are simply total minus correct — here, 8.

Does it work for points instead of questions?

Yes — the math is identical. Enter points earned as "correct" and points possible as "total". Partial credit works too: 17.5 points out of 20 = 87.5%, a B+.

How many more correct answers would I have needed for the next grade?

The table above shows the minimum correct count for every letter grade. Because you can't get half a question right, the count is rounded up: an A needs 93% of 50 questions, which is 46.5, so 47 correct in practice. At 42 correct you are 2 short of a B+ (44) and 5 short of an A (47).

What letter grade scale is used?

The common US plus/minus scale: A+ ≥ 97%, A ≥ 93%, A− ≥ 90%, B+ ≥ 87%, B ≥ 83%, B− ≥ 80%, C+ ≥ 77%, C ≥ 73%, C− ≥ 70%, D+ ≥ 67%, D ≥ 63%, D− ≥ 60%, F below 60%. Scales vary by school and instructor — confirm your syllabus.

Can my score be over 100%?

No. Correct answers can't exceed the total, so the highest possible score is 100%. If your test offered extra credit, add the extra-credit points to both numbers — e.g. 52 points earned out of a 50-point test plus 5 extra-credit points possible is 52 ÷ 55 = 94.5% — or use the grade average calculator, which reports scores over 100% as-is.

How is this different from the grade average calculator?

This page grades one single test: correct over total. The grade average calculator averages several tests or assignments into one percentage, and the weighted grade calculator applies different weights to homework, quizzes and exams.
